Melting & Freezing
Hot? It melts. Cold? It freezes. Easy!
Melting and freezing are reversible physical changes driven by adding or removing heat energy.
๐ก
Big Idea
Energy is the key that unlocks changes between states of matter.
Melting
When something solid gets warm enough, it MELTS into a liquid. Ice melts into water. Chocolate melts in your hand. Wax melts on a candle. Every solid has its own special melting point โ the exact temperature where it stops being able to hold its rigid shape and starts to flow. Ice melts at 0ยฐC, but a metal like iron needs to be heated to a scorching 1538ยฐC before it melts โ that's hotter than lava!
Try it!
Slide the temperature. Watch water change!

Freezing cold
Water is frozen into a SOLID โ ice!
